An Almost Perfect Evening - Out In the Wilds
15th April 2017 - 0 comments
Preparation can get you 90% towards a great photographic experience but you can put a real spanner in the works by being distracted or forgetful - this little article recounts a sorry tale of carelessness and a too wild imagination. Go on, have a read.

Discretion and valour... Steep hills and extra baggage
11th April 2017 - 0 comments
So many plans were spinning in my head before I went to Torridon - plans that would have been excellent for a younger, slimmer, fitter photographer. But physical condition didn't stop me from enjoying the excellent Scottish National Nature Reserve paths and valuable lessons were learned ahead of my main target Coire Mhic Fhearchair.

Torridon - Light, subject, creativity - punctum!
06th April 2017 - 0 comments
Last week I gave my self permission to indulge in 7 days of landscape photography, on my own in one of the wildest and most unadulterated parts of Europe - Torridon. The weather was very kind, as I explored the mountains and glens but also the concepts of effort vs reward and "studium" and "punctum", which I explain in this blog entry.

....and getting faster at that!

A great year for competitions and bizarrely mainly with urban landscapes! But I am sticking with what I love best, mountains and coast. Delighted with 5 shortlstings from 3 competitions.

You have to adapt your style to your audience to be a commercial photographer, but I have the luxury of shooting what I actually like to shoot, and so have kept my literal style intact - even if it makes competitions tougher when you have to produce an eye catching image that holds a judges attention at first glance. It does encourage me to better myself continuously.

Be still my beating heart...
21st January 2017 - 0 comments
Competitions lead to self doubt, introverted critique, pits of despair and rare but wonderful highs. I enter them full of trepidation and angst - but only now and then. Usually I ignore them, to make sure that I am only taking pictures that I want to, not that I think a competition judge will like.

Amazingly this seems a successful approach, I've entered these national competitions in 4 of the last 6 years and just received my 7th short listing, this time in the Outdoor Photographer of the Year (OPOTY) with "The Wee Grouse Beaters Hut". Happy days!

My latest gallery, All Alone in Ardnamurchan has a small selection, from a place that that makes you feel quiet adventurous when you drive to it, trying to stay on the road while dodging deer, all the while with your head on a swivel as you try to take in the rugged beauty of the place.
